I went up to Manchester for the weekend to take part in the Greater Manchester marathon on 19 April. The start/finish was outside Old Trafford and the race is advertised as the UK's flattest, friendliest marathon. It certainly lived up to both these attributes. It was flat and the crowd support was fantastic with lots of entertainment from local choirs to bands. The race was certainly well organised. I don't think I've ever seen so many toilets at the start of a race.
Given my preparation had been somewhat sporadic due to various circumstances, I was still undecided about what race pace to aim for on the morning of the event. Given the course was flat, I decided on aiming for a finish time of 3:20. Accordingly I set off at 7:37/mile which felt comfortable. Although somewhat less comfortable by mile 23, I managed to hold on to this pace and was really thrilled to finish in 3:19:36; my fastest marathon time in 5 years! I was 6th in mu age category.
I would certainly recommend this marathon. It was a fantastic event.
